3 Reasons Why Indoor Plants Can Help You Sleep

December 29, 2021

Philodendron selloum gold supplier MAYUN shows you why indoor plants can help you sleep.

1. Indoor plants reduce stress levels

Being in nature is known to reduce stress. Whether it's interacting with indoor plants, taking a walk in the park or fully immersing yourself in a forest bath, the research is remarkably consistent: our bodies and minds respond positively to nature.

Now, if more stress means poor sleep and more plants mean less stress, it doesn't take a genius to discover that more plants should also mean better sleep!

If you want to know which plants work best, check out our range of bedroom plants. These plants have been carefully selected by our team of experts for their relaxing powers.

2. Plants have their own circadian rhythms

Plants have internal cellular clocks, just like we do. We know this because when plants are deprived of light and other queues associated with their natural environment, they continue to follow the rhythm of the day.

Some plants respond more strongly than others to the time of day. calathea orbifolia, as a prayer plant, is a particularly good example of a plant that changes according to its own cellular clock. At night, the leaves of Calathea close and the plant releases higher levels of oxygen.

This may be related to the nature of circadian rhythms shared by plants and humans, the sedative effect plants have or other unknown properties. But if you want to get a good night's sleep, it wouldn't hurt to test the theory yourself!

3. We are kinder to ourselves

Psychologists have found that caring for plants can be a powerful tool in helping people to be kinder to themselves. People develop safe, low-risk relationships with plants, which helps them develop better relationships with themselves and with others. In essence, nurturing another creature helps us to become more self-compassionate.

Being more accepting of ourselves can help counteract the voices of doubt that keep us up at night. When we are less self-critical, we are less preoccupied with unnecessary worries.

The best houseplants for sleep

If you think you've tried everything to help you fall asleep, then you're probably ready to try plants. But which plants should you start with?

Well, on the one hand, any plant that makes your home feel more vibrant and welcoming should have the aforementioned psychological impact.

But there are some plants that we particularly recommend for sleeping, both because they move throughout the day, such as Calathea Warscewiczli, and because they produce more oxygen at night.
